On September 19, 2017, community members gathered for the Western Property Owners Association (WPOA) General Meeting. This gathering served as a crucial moment for residents to discuss pressing issues, engage with one another, and stay informed about developments that affect their community.
Call to Order and Introduction
President Gerry Kelly kickstarted the meeting at 7:35 PM, following the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting provided a much-needed platform for members to raise concerns and share ideas about community matters. The atmosphere was filled with enthusiasm as participants looked forward to contributing to the betterment of their neighborhood.
Minutes from Previous Meetings
The approval process for the minutes from the previous April General Meeting experienced a small hiccup, as they were rescheduled for discussion at the upcoming November meeting. This delay pointed out the WPOA’s ongoing dedication to ensuring that all discussions are accurately recorded and available for review, reinforcing transparency and accountability among the members.
Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer Arnold Finamore provided an overview of the WPOA’s finances as of September 6, 2017. The community’s bank balance was reported at $7,410.16 after accounting for a $160 fee for the PO Box. Notably, the association reached a commendable milestone with 300 paid members, reflecting the community's commitment to supporting the WPOA's goals. With this solid financial standing, the WPOA is well-positioned to fund future initiatives and events.
Introduction of the Technology Committee
Next, Vice President RoseAnn Vernice introduced the Technology Committee, which includes Thomas Rivera, Joe Licari, Lauren Grima, and herself as Chair, with Maureen Traxler absent. RoseAnn highlighted significant website improvements aimed at enhancing user experience and encouraged all members to explore these changes. Furthermore, Lauren promoted a new Facebook page, advocating for member engagement. She noted, “Liking our page will keep you updated on important community news, events, and discussions.”
Upcoming Community Events
RoseAnn unveiled an exciting opportunity for community interaction: the WPOA Bird Sanctuary Tour scheduled for October 21, from 1 PM to 3 PM. This event will not only educate residents about local wildlife but also foster camaraderie among neighbors, creating a sense of unity and strengthening community bonds. Such interactive events are critical for nurturing a vibrant community spirit.
President’s Address and Nominating Committee
President Gerry Kelly resumed his address, announcing the formation of a Nominating Committee tasked with identifying candidates for the Trustee position with a term ending in April 2018. The committee comprises Joseph Ra, Joellen Flanagan, Germaine Greco, Richard Valley, Gloria Weinrich, and Tommy Rivera. This proactive measure is significant for ensuring future leadership is strong and capable of guiding the WPOA.
Fall Calendar and Outreach Initiatives
During the meeting, Gerry reviewed the Fall Calendar, highlighting three upcoming outreach events: the Bird Sanctuary tour, a Meet and Greet at Doc O'Gradys on Nassau Blvd, and Holiday Christmas Caroling on New Hyde Park Road. These events are designed to promote social connections and enrich the community experience for residents. Engaging in these activities can create lasting relationships and a lively neighborhood atmosphere.
Addressing Traffic Concerns
In response to ongoing traffic challenges in the area, Gerry discussed a straightforward process for bringing issues to the village's attention. He recommended that residents draft letters specifically addressing traffic concerns. This step ensures that community voices are heard and action is taken to improve safety.
Recognition of Summer Activities
President Kelly took a moment to commend the success of the Garden City Pool over the summer. He also recapped highlights from the community summer party, emphasizing their role in creating joyful memories and reinforcing social ties. Events like these are vital for fostering a supportive and interconnected community.
Technology Committee Acknowledgment
The meeting concluded with an acknowledgment of the Technology Committee's hard work. Special recognition was given to Tommy Rivera for his contributions. Recognizing individual efforts promotes teamwork and cultivates a strong sense of community spirit, motivating others to participate actively.
School Board Issues and Community Involvement
Gerry distributed a summary concerning current school board issues, urging community involvement in local educational matters. He pointed out an online questionnaire related to the Superintendent Search available on the school administration's website. He outlined the importance of resident input during public meetings about the Superintendent Search taking place on September 28 and 29. Encouraging community participation ensures that educational leadership reflects residents' values and priorities.
Looking Ahead
The meeting concluded with a strong sense of community commitment and an eagerness to engage in future activities. The discussions highlighted the active involvement of members and the leadership's dedication to enhancing the community's well-being.
As the WPOA looks forward to the next meeting in November, it is crucial for all members to stay engaged and informed. Every voice contributes to shaping the future of the Western Property Owners Association, reinforcing the idea that collective action leads to positive change.
